Skate Board – A Hobby Turn Serious

Skateboard shed its transport equipment image of the late 40s and 50s to become what it is today, the recreational tool. The early skateboard championships were ‘soap box derbies’ held in cities during that era of crude skateboards, which sometimes used to double up as surf boards too.

Skateboards as Sports Gear
With mass production becoming a reality in the 1960s skateboards underwent a lot of transformation for better; from solid wood or metals to plywood for decks, flat no shape to concavity, clay composite steel wheels to polyurethane made ones and finally single action trucks (axles) to aluminum constructed two part trucks. Well, how do these things help? At first, the question may strike an irrelevant chord, but not so when you see the difference. Extreme sports like street luging, skateboarding on rails and ramps, and snow boarding off nearly impossible jumps are hotter today than they have ever been before. The athletes who pursue these challenging activities often become as dedicated as Olympians and spend hours every day practicing and improving their technique in order to be able to enjoy the thrill that only making the perfect ollie or dropping a hill on a buttboard can bring. Extreme athletes often refer to the adrenaline rush of competing as being “amped,” and many say that there is no other feeling in the world that is as satisfying. For most of these rough and tumble athletes, part of the appeal of extreme sports is the danger.
 
Unlike sports that are regulated by official certified judges and require the athletes to wear protective gear and perform with ship shape equipment, extreme sports competitions sometimes include relatively unprotected athletes competing on somewhat ramshackle paraphernalia, like luge boards made out of skateboards with plywood additions. These conditions lead to greater thrills for many of the participants, because the more dangerous a situation is the more adrenaline the body produces, leading to the feeling of being “amped.” However, the long term damage that results from the kinds of injuries that many extreme athletes endure often leaves these enthusiastic men and women feeling less than thrilled. Whether or not the excitement of extreme sports is worth the danger is something that nobody can decide but the athlete who is putting his or her body on the line. However, if you or somebody in your life is thinking about joining the hardcore world of extreme sports, it is a good idea to do some research into what common injuries are, and how they can be prevented.
 
Often, wearing a helmet or certain kinds of padding can make the difference between ending up in the hospital after a wipe-out and walking away with a few pesky bruises. The hazards of every sport are unique, so the kinds of kneepads that a skateboarder favors might not be very much help to a street luger. The only protective gear that will really help an athlete is the gear that is specifically appropriate to his or her sport, so before you put any money into protective gear, read as much as you can about the hazards you are likely to face, and try to get some firsthand advice from experienced athletes in the field you want to be a part of. Many people take up skateboarding as a simple means of transportation.  It is portable, fairly inexpensive, and faster than walking.  Skateboarding goes beyond rolling on the ground, though, as many people have witnessed.  Driving down the street, it is not unlikely you will see skateboarders defying basic physics, as they slide down handrails, stairs, benches and other various locations commonly found around town.  Who do these stunts generally appeal to? Adrenaline junkies. Why? Just for the thrill of it!

Addicted to the excitement, the inevitable danger, and being invariably involved, adrenaline junkies are eager to learn tricks that push boundaries. Pushing boundaries gives them the feeling of being invincible.  

Because certain skateboards are better designed for certain stunts, and certain stunts are more stimulating than others to different people, it is important to experiment with different skateboard designs.  This can include using a skateboard with a different number of wheels, unique type of wheel, or boards of different dynamics. Doing so is what makes the simple skater evolve into a thrill-seeker. With each unique design comes new possibilities. Injury risk is more of an encourager than a deterrent, as it fuels desire to push boundaries.

Chances are that you have noticed “no skating” signs around town, because it is often illegal to skate in and around the city. With all the skateboard parks scattered around America, it seems that skateboarders are often seeking new places to seek new thrills.  The thrill of a skateboard park soon diminishes once they have mastered what it has to offer, and once that trill is diminished, they seek new thrills.  Going to new areas gives them time to try out new tricks, having their imagination as their only limit.

Upgrading their skateboard is another way skateboards expend their thrill. From wood skate wheels, to the motorized skateboard, skateboarders can use various designs to reach a variety of heights, speeds, and techniques.

Skateboarders enjoy the challenge of learning new tricks to beat the champions while at the same time enjoy watching the champions perform tricks they have not yet learned themselves.

Ironically enough, risk of injury is one thing skateboarders thrive off of. Whether or not they ignore, or whether or not they want to defy the possibility of injury, fact remains that it is usually an appealing element to skateboarders. The fact is that the more likely they are to receive an injury, the harder they try, and more determined they are to perfect the trick.

Unique designs, different environments/possibilities, breaking the law, mastering new tricks, and risk of injury are all pieces which create a whole.  The whole is what many people call “adrenaline junkies”, or thrill seekers.

Some people go on to become professional skateboarders, and even make a living at it. They do all types of cool tricks in order to provide entertainment for the public. Although these skateboarders may perform some pretty awesome stunts, these stunts can also be quite dangerous. The way that they jump around in the air and move their skateboards around in precarious situations can be very risky. This is why only experts should perform these types of spectacular acts. A person becomes an expert skateboarder only after years of constant skateboarding. They must ensure to protect their bodies in case of falls, which means purchasing lots of protective gear. Skateboarding Wonders And Wizards And Design Decor

Skateboarding is a sport in which many compete and some make a career; it’s a means of transportation, and a way of life. Sure, you’ve seen it in operation, but how’s a skateboard manufactured? The basic material is maple, selected for its tight, close grain; from straight stock. Cut and stripped, the maple is cut and prepared for laminating. Maple wood is a sustainable resource, and offers a stable wood that is not prone to warping in the presence of moisture.
 
Sliced thin, seven layers of veneer are fed through a machine that applies just the right amount of glue; then the layers of veneer are placed in a hydraulic press that forms the nose, tail, and concave of the skateboard under pressure. Some manufacturers specialize in ’slick’ boards, which means that a layer of slippery plastic has been bonded to the bottom. When the veneers emerge from the press-shaped like a stretched ‘U’-they’re ready to be drilled and cut. These blanks are mounted in a drill press, and drilled out to mount the desired wheelbase. Skateboards are further shaped on the band saw.
 
Once they’re cut, boards are sanded and routed out by hand; it’s a skilled operation. With the decks completely sanded, they are ready to be sprayed with a sealant. Decks are screen-printed by hand, one color at a time, starting with the darkest color first. Now printed, the decks are stacked in a rack to dry. The paint can take three to five days to cure, depending on its formulation. Boxed and crated, the skateboards are ready to ship to your local shop.
 
How much should you expect to pay for a skateboard? In the US, you’ll pay about $100 for a locally-manufactured board. Keep an eye on advertisements in industry magazines Big Brother, Slap, Thrasher, and Transworld Skateboarding (all US-only titles). Of course, here we’re talking about ‘new school’ boards that are skinny, short-ish, and almost symmetrical, with small, hard wheels.
 
Older boards, used during the 1980s, were characterized by wide, longish, asymmetrical decks and large wheels. The advantage the new boards offer over old ones is that they use less wood (that’s an advantage for the manufacturers), and get up to speed more quickly (which is an advantage for the skateboarder).
 
Are you choosing a skateboard as a gift? Have a long conversation with the person you’re buying the skateboard for, so that you get what they’ll use, neither more nor less. You might want to look into the preassembled complete boards that some shops offer around the holidays, if only because you’ll pay less than if you put the board together piece-by-piece.
